      <description>BETHPAGE, NY – The Navy marked a major milestone today in its effort to protect public health and restore groundwater quality in the Bethpage community with a ribbon‑cutting for the Phase II Groundwater Treatment Plant, part of the Navy’s ongoing Environmental Restoration Program for Former Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant (NWIRP) Bethpage. The plant is approaching full operational status and represents a significant step in advancing the Navy’s groundwater plume restoration effort. Construction began in 2021, and the Navy invested approximately $46 million in this phase to bring the plant online, including deep recovery wells.

      <description>NAVAL AIR STATION SIGONELLA, Italy — As severe weather swept across Sicily on Jan. 20-21, a unified team from Commander, Naval Installations Command (CNIC) and Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Europe Africa Central protected critical infrastructure at Naval Air Station Sigonella, ensuring the mission never stopped despite significant threats from widespread flooding that placed its infrastructure, personnel and mission at considerable risk.

Following a severe storm, the team’s rapid response restored the plant to full operational status in less than 24 hours, preventing potential environmental damage and ensuring the installation’s mission readiness was not degraded.
