NAPLES, Italy - More than 15 Seabees with Public Works Department (PWD) Naples attached to Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Europe Africa Southwest Asia (EURAFSWA) designed, built and brought thrills to a haunted house at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples Oct. 25-27.

NSA Naples Morale Welfare and Recreation department hosted an annual event called “Spooktacular” for an early celebration of Halloween; where the Seabees’ haunted house was one of the main attractions.

“This haunted house is done by the Seabee Association every year,” said Engineering Aide 3rd Class Michael Miller, Seabee Association treasurer and PWD Naples tech librarian. “We volunteer to take part in many events on base and in the local community. This event helps us raise money for COMRELs [community relations projects] and for our [Seabee] ball.”

Spooktacular is one of the biggest events held at NSA Naples that allows PWD Naples Seabees to raise money for the Seabee Ball that will be held March 8, 2014.

The Seabees spent months planning and preparing for Spooktacular, as well as several hours in their off-duty time building the house. Each room in the house had themes from the original 14th century epic poem “Divine Comedy” by Dante Alighieri which was later made into a movie and video game called “Dante’s Inferno.”

They dressed up as ghouls, zombies, chainsaw killers, butchers and more to bring the haunted house to life. Naples High School students and Seabee spouses joined in the scare effort.

“This is a great opportunity for us to show our creativity, as Seabees, to the community,” said Construction Mechanic 2nd Class Andrew Tatro, PWD Naples environmental hazardous waste manager. “We’re just happy to give something back and make the kids feel like they are in the states, celebrating Halloween.”

Kids from the ages of 2 and up, service members and their families were able to brave the fright of the haunted house throughout the event.

“I took my little sister to the haunted house and she was screaming from beginning to end,” said Allen Custodio, a NSA Naples family member. “The Seabees did a great job coming up with their costumes and scare tactics; they were very realistic.”

PWD Naples provides a full range of NAVFAC construction, engineering, facility maintenance, utilities, transportation and environmental services to NSA Naples and tenant commands.
