Naples Emergency Management Drill

05/29/14

NAPLES, ItalyMore than 40 volunteers from Fleet and Family Support Center, local residents and service members assigned to Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples, Italy participated in an emergency management drill May 29, 2014.

An emergency management drill is an exercise meant to prepare the installation, the local communities, and service members and their families in the event that a significant catastrophic event, either natural or man-made, potentially affecting their respective duty stations.

“This drill was the first time NSA Naples has set-up an EFAC [Emergency Family Assistance Center],” said Lynn Marie Smith Martin, director, Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC).  “Emergency management drills are necessary for departments to practice policies set in place to help in the event of mass casualties, displaced members of the community and other possible scenarios.”

Smith Martin stated that the activation of an EFAC by the commanding officer may be necessary following an all hazards incident, where the anticipated needs are beyond the capability of the agencies primarily tasked to provide immediate crisis intervention.

EFACs are a central location for Navy families to access assistance and resources that they may need following a disaster, and provide support in response to the full spectrum of crisis or events including authorized departures.

Members from FFSC, the Housing Office, Personnel Support Detachment, Legal, Training Department, NSA Naples Emergency Management Non-Combatant Evacuation Operations and the American Red Cross participated in the drill. Each department played a vital part in the successful completion of the drill.

“The drill was very successful as it was a first ever and FFSC extraneously benefitted as the drill served as a fabulous team builder,” said Smith Martin. “All participants now have an increased understanding of actual procedures to more effectively respond to a real world event.”
