Seabee recognized for improving Navy quality of life

Jacksonville, Fla. – Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast Executive Officer Capt. Scott Hurst recognized Builder 1st Class Petty Officer Douglas Bennett March 2 at the 2013 Engineer’s Week Awards Banquet held at the Hyatt Regency in Jacksonville, Fla. Bennett is a project supervisor assigned to Construction Battalion Maintenance Unit 202, Detachment Jacksonville at Naval Air Station (NAS) Jacksonville.

Bennett was presented the Enlisted Achievement Award, at the North East Florida Engineer’s Week event where more than 100 people attended. The event concludes a week-long celebration of engineering activities recognizing National Engineer’s Week.

“I was happy and very pleased that the organization recognized what we do for our country and the Civil Engineer Corps,” said Bennett. “Seabees are such a small part of the Navy.”
The award recognizes individuals from the uniformed services and private sector supporting the engineering profession, the nation’s national security objectives and the SAME Strategic Plan, which promotes recognition for the internal and external accomplishment of SAME members.

Bennett’s completion of construction programs is directly attributable to the significant improvement of personnel support, welfare, and recreation at Naval Air Station Jacksonville. He has supervised many projects since he began with the NAVFAC family more than 15 years ago.

As described in his award, Bennett’s efforts as a leader play an important role in enabling the Naval Air Station’s overall effort to not only perform its mission, but be voted as the “Best in the Navy” for two straight years.

“Excellent selection for this year’s Enlisted Achievement Award,” said Senior Chief Steelworker Jose Torres, NAVFAC Southeast Senior Enlisted Leader. “We are very proud of his accomplishments throughout the year.”

Bennett has a distinct manner in which he effectively trains, mentors, and develops future leaders of the Naval Construction Force (NCF); he conducts meaningful Career Development Boards (CDBs) and serves as an instructor for newly promoted petty officers.

“A talented builder, he performs at a high level but more importantly, his dedication in mentoring his troops and guiding them in proper construction practices makes him an attractive candidate for the award,” said Torres.

Everyone in the command is proud of him reaching this achievement.
