NAVFAC Southeast Awards Fire Suppression and Alarms Contract

07/13/17

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast
awarded a nearly $900,000 contract June 28 to W.W. Gay Fire Protection, Inc. of
Jacksonville, Florida for a new fire alarm and mass notification system in Building 2740 at
Naval Air Station (NAS) Kingsville, Texas and in Building 24 at Navy Outlying Field (OLF)
Orange Grove, Texas.

“This project brings much needed upgrades to our installation's command headquarters
building and Building 24, the main administrative and focal building for our mission at
NALFOG,” said Capt. Erik A. Spitzer, NAS Kingsville commanding officer. “These upgrades
will enhance the safety of the personnel who work in these facilities.”

Building 24 houses fire protection, administrative, galley and pilot briefing rooms at OLF
Orange Grove.

The project updates the existing fire alarm panels in Building 2740 and provides new
sustainable alarm systems. A new Mass Notification System is provided for both Building
2740 and at Building 24, where there currently is none. New pipework, underground water
supplies and upgrades to interior piping, sprinkler heads and sprinkler head relocations
will be accomplished in Building 2740.

“The fire protection systems in these facilities are outdated and unsustainable,” said Lt.
Cmdr. Steve Parks, NAS Kingsville public works officer. “The new systems have a mass
notification function that will provide immediate information to all the building occupants in the
event of an emergency.”

Work will be performed in Kingsville and is expected to be complete by July 2018.
NAS Kingsville is one of two naval air stations designated for undergraduate Jet/Strike
pilot training. The air station consists of more than 4,000 acres of land, including four
8,000 foot runaways, and encompasses more than 36,000 cubic miles of airspace,
including five Military Operating Areas (MOAs) and one Warning Area. Follow them on
