JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Several members of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command
(NAVFAC) Southeast staff participated as staff support and guest and keynote speakers at
the 2017 Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Southeastern Tri-Regional Joint
Engineer Training Symposium August 29-31 held in Jacksonville, Florida.

The Society of Military Engineer’s (SAME) Jacksonville Post hosted over 400 hundred
contractors, civil servants and military personnel in a convention at the Hyatt Regency
Jacksonville Riverfront to focus on addressing the challenges facing our nation’s military
infrastructure. The theme of the discussions was “Securing Our Future” featuring talks on
resiliency, environment, construction management and business.

NAVFAC Southeast Environmental Program Manager Bill Powers, spoke of current
environmental challenges and his perspective on the future of environmental issues for
federal agencies. He intimated there would be funding going forward for environmental
programs because ‘there are laws in place that cannot be ignored.’

NAVFAC Southeast Environmental Engineer Jens Sapin, who works in NAVFAC Southeast’s
environmental compliance air and water section, spoke to some of the challenges faced by
NAVFAC Southeast in the wastewater compliance area.
