Public Works Department Yokosuka Wins CNO Environmental Awards

YOKOSUKA, Japan— Fleet Activities (FLEACT) Yokosuka received two Fiscal Year 2013 Chief of Naval Operations environmental awards during a presentation at the Pentagon, Arlington, Va. Aug. 20.

FLEACT Yokosuka took home the Cultural Resources Management – Installation and Environmental Quality Non-Industrial Installation awards.

The awards ceremony featured a keynote address by Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert and was attended by Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Fleet Readiness and Logistics Vice Adm. Philip Cullom, and Director, Chief of Naval Operations Energy and Environmental Readiness Division Rear Adm. Kevin Slates.

“The Fleet Activities Yokosuka Environmental team has shown consistent excellence over the years as reflected by their multiple awards in Environmental Quality and Cultural Resources Management,” said Public Works Officer Cmdr. Ben Miller, PWD Yokosuka.   “The combined US and Japanese Environmental team should feel deep pride in Navy leadership's acknowledgment of their dedicated efforts in support of the U.S. Navy's largest overseas installation.”

The environmental team at Public Works Department Yokosuka was recognized for promotion, awareness and education efforts, their environmental management system, recycling program and waste diversion.

The Cultural Resources team was recognized for its joint efforts with Japanese technical experts to manage preservation requirements and preserve cultural and historical items. It also involved the community in volunteer work, tours, lectures and activities.

“The team has been doing outreach, public education and developing partnerships to get the job done," said Chuck Sayon, director, PWD Yokosuka Environmental.
