Yokosuka Industry Day Builds Local Business Relationships

Public Works Department Yokosuka representatives met with more than 60 local contractors to discuss service contract consolidation at and Industry Day at the Yokosuka Municipal Workers Welfare Hall May 12.

Industry feedback indicates some Japanese contractors are reluctant to work with the U.S. Navy due to difficulty in complying with U.S. procedures and language requirements. The event addressed these concerns and efforts were made to find contractors who can partner and sub-contract with existing contractors familiar with U.S. requirements. Long term goals are to increase competition, reduce the number of active service contracts, and to establish eight-year multi-annex Base Operations Service contracts.

“It was fantastic to see the great turn-out of contractors who showed a genuine interest to improve their relationship with the U.S. Navy,” said Public Works Officer Cmdr. Ben Miller. “Today's Industry Day will go a long way to break down barriers, both real and perceived, while improving the relationship the U.S. Navy has with local Japanese contractors. I look forward to the many opportunities ahead for both groups."

“The goal here was to do market research,” said Contracting Officer Rosario Hocog. “To find out if the contractors will bid on a large consolidated contract. We will have to ensure this will be in the Government’s best interest.”

Representatives from Naval Air Facility Atsugi attended the event. An option being considered is for both Atsugi and Yokosuka contracting offices to explore a multi-base multiple award service contract to increase savings and operational efficiencies.

“Our hope is that bringing several service contracts together into one will eliminate contract actions and create a more efficient way of doing business,” said Facilities Engineering and Acquisition Division Director Lt. Cmdr. Paul Weyant.
