Rls 15-12 ... On Monday, Aug. 24, Navy personnel were notified at 10:20 a.m. of a wastewater spill at Merry Point Landing, close to the waterfront on the Pearl Harbor-side of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Crews arrived soon after and immediately began vacuuming up wastewater exiting an overflowing manhole. The spill was stopped at 11 a.m.
Personnel have estimated a total of 1,000 gallons was released, with 850 entering into the nearby storm drain which leads to Pearl Harbor waters. Crews cleaned up all wastewater on the ground and as much as possible at the entrance to the storm drain.
Spill was due to an overflowing manhole caused by equipment failure at a sewage lift station coupled with higher than normal amounts of rain water due to storm and flooding conditions throughout the island of Oahu.
The Navy made all necessary notifications to the State Department of Health (DOH) as required by the wastewater treatment system’s operating permit. It posted signs near and around the exit of the storm drain system. Upon DOH direction, no sampling is required for this incident.
This public notification is an administrative requirement of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit issued to the NAVFAC Hawaii, Wastewater Treatment facility.
