Marine Corps Installation Command Major General Vincent A. Coglianese Travels to NAVFAC EXWC

Commander, Marine Corps Installation Command (MCICOM) Major General Vincent Coglianese embarked on a one-day tour and briefing of the Naval Facilities (NAVFAC) Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center (EXWC). The visit is part of a joint strategic partnership between EXWC and MCICOM to build maritime lethality by increasing the resiliency, flexibility and sustainability of both command's overall infrastructure through research and development.

PORT HUENEME, Calif. (Jan. 11, 2019) — Marine Corps Installations Command (MCICOM) Major General Vincent  Coglianese embarked on a one-day visit to Naval Facilities (NAVFAC) Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center (EXWC) on Jan. 11.

EXWC welcomed Maj. Gen. Coglianese as he toured the warfare center’s facilities and attended numerous briefings on engineering and technology projects utilized by MCICOM’s land and maritime operations.

During the 4-hour visit, Maj. Gen. Coglianese met with EXWC key leaders, service members and civil service scientists and engineers to reaffirm defense relationships and engage in collaborative discussions ranging from technological advances in smart installations, to the progressions in repurposing weaponry needed to generate combat power.

“As one of our most important supported commands, we embrace MCICOM's position that installation commands are designated to generate combat power for U.S. forward-deployed forces,” said Captain Michael Saum, EXWC commanding officer.  “Going forward, our goal is to enhance EXWC's support of the United States Marine Corps, working together across the competition-conflict-spectrum from U.S. and allied bases to any overseas contingency locations.”

The visit is part of a joint strategic partnership between EXWC and MCICOM to build maritime lethality by increasing the resiliency, flexibility and sustainability of both command’s overall infrastructure through research and development.

“MCICOM provides the force and readiness through generating combat power to develop solutions that maintain tactical advantages over our adversaries,” said Maj. Gen. Coglianese. “NAVFAC EXWC grasps MCICOM’s mission to optimize maritime prepositioning forces necessary to support our warfighters. Their approach reassures MCICOM that by working directly with EXWC’s skilled scientists and engineers, both commands will continue to benefit from this mutually-beneficial partnership."

Commenting on the visit, NAVFAC EXWC’s Technical Director Kail Macias said EXWC’s continued mission is to provide commands like MCICOM the most venerated solutions to the most complex problems in the expeditionary and logistics warfare space.

“We were honored to host Maj. Gen. Coglianese and share our projects and technologies that are in direct alignment with the MCICOM mission,” said Macias. “EXWC will soon implement new authorities and flexibilities made possible by the warfare center's recent designation as a science and technology reinvention laboratory, which allow us to recruit, train and retain scientists and engineers at the top of their fields.”

Looking forward, both EXWC and MCICOM will continue to examine EXWC’s technological advancements and considered defense and policy approaches engineered for tactical integration into the existing MCICOM warfighter approach.
