FAIRFIELD, Calif. (NNS) - A ribbon cutting ceremony hosted March 28 by Col. Dwight Sones, 60th Air Mobility Wing commander, celebrated the completion of three years of construction of an airfield in Travis Air Force Base (AFB).

The newly constructed airfield will provide the Air Force with decades of training to pilots and air crews and will pay for itself in just a few years, said Sones.

Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded the $68 million contract to Baldi Brothers in 2008 for the construction of two separate runways in adjacent locations. One runway is approximately 10,995 feet by 150 feet. The second runway measures 4,100 feet by 90 feet and is an assault landing zone runway. This project allows C-17 Globemaster III crews to practice combat landings on site, saving taxpayers $7.3 million in annual fuel costs.

"In all, the combined efforts of Air Force's engineers and senior leaders working in partnership with the ROICC professional staff and contractor led to the completion of a very successful project for everyone - including taxpayers," said Lt. Joe Iacovone, ROICC team lead for this project.

The ribbon cutting ceremony included a C-17 crew's dramatic "touch and go" performance. NAVFAC Southwest Resident Officer in Charge of Construction (ROICC) at Travis AFB Cmdr. Chris Beaubien, U.S. Rep. John Garamendi, Baldi Brothers General Manager Mike Baldi, and Sones cut the ceremonial ribbon on the newly constructed runway as spectators and dignitaries observed.

The project replaced a runway constructed in 1946 for former Fairfield Army Air Base. About 54,000 cubic yards of concrete from the old runway was crushed on-site and reused as base for the two new runways.

Garamendi gave significant credit to both the Navy and Air Force for a job well done.
