JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast awarded a $10 million contract July 25 to Anthony and Gordon Construction Company, a small business out of Knoxville, Tenn. for the design-bid-build to construct an addition to and renovation of an existing aircraft component maintenance facility at Naval Air Station (NAS) Corpus Christi, Texas.

The work to be performed includes construction of an addition to the existing Building 49; shop space and a mechanical room will be added on the first floor, while the second floor will contain offices, a break room, new restrooms and additional mechanical space.

The original Building 49 spaces will be renovated with minor reconfiguration of walls on both the first and second floors, providing interior access to the addition and extend the stairwell to the roof. Exterior work includes the addition of two lean-to canopies.

NAVFAC Southeast continues to build on its success by providing contract opportunities to small businesses.

"We continue to review projects to see what can be set aside for small business to maximize opportunities for Small Business," said Nelson Smith, NAVFAC Southeast small business manager.

Each year NAVFAC establishes target goals are established for Small Business, Small Disadvantaged Business, Historically Underutilized Business Zone Small Business, Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business, and Women-Owned Small Business categories.

Smith explained that the maximum practicable utilization of small business concerns is a matter of national interest with both social and economic benefits. America's 27 million small businesses employ more that 58 percent of the private work force, generate more than 51 percent of the nation's gross domestic product, and are the principal source of new jobs.

Work for this project is expected to be completed by April 2015.
