PEARL HARBOR (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Hawaii awarded a $9.8 million contract Aug. 30 to Sumo-Nan JV II LLC (small business), Honolulu, Hawaii for a firm-fixed task order under a multiple award construction contract to renovate a Quality Assurance lab at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

"We are currently living in a 1970's designed lab building which is not only outdated; but very inefficient for the work we do today," said David Wong, laboratory director. "The renovation will open multiple small lab rooms into one large, open area where everything will be visually uncluttered and more conducive for execution of our mission."

Built in 1979, the lab structure is a permanent two-story concrete aging building, showing deterioration and in need of many repairs. It houses the Quality Assurance Laboratory which has a mission to provide analytical result s and technical recommendations in chemistry and metallurgy to ensure Navy ships are supplied with quality material and supported by sound industrial processes. The deterioration of the building and the need to update the laboratory's design features for current technology and workload are driving this renovation.

The work to be performed provides for renovating a portion of the ground floor of the laboratory space in two phases. Repair work includes replacement of deteriorated building material finishes, partition walls, doors, mechanical systems (plumbing, air conditioning and hood vents), emergency generator, and removal of walls. Incidental work due to the repairs includes adjusting/replacing interior walls, acoustical ceiling system, lighting system and fire protection system. Repair of the ground floor restroom includes reconfiguration to meet current Architectural Barriers Act Accessibility standards.

Construction work includes the consolidation and reconfiguration of separate lab and support spaces for efficiency and in accordance with current laboratory practices and operations; installing interior windows for laboratory viewing; increasing the number of plumbing fixtures to meet current usage; and installing additional data cables and new cable television service/outlets.

Renovations are expected to be completed by February 2015.
