YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Far East awarded an $11.4 million design-build contract for the renovation of family housing units on Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Japan to Nihon Meccs Corporation of Tokyo, Dec. 2.
Work to be performed includes design and construction of the whole-house revitalization of 34 townhomes, including 26 three-bedroom units and eight four-bedroom units.
"The intent [of this project] is to improve overall quality of life for residents," said NAVFAC Far East's Public Works Department Public Works Officer, Cmdr. Jeffrey Sherwood, "and to extend the useable service life of the facilities."
Specific improvements include interior renovation of kitchens, bathrooms, living spaces, doors and windows with all new finishes and hardware; a complete upgrade of electrical, ventilation, fire protection and plumbing systems to meet the latest building code and energy efficiency requirements; and exterior building and ground repairs to improve drainage and living quality for residents.
Work is scheduled to begin in June 2014. This contract was competitively procured via the Asia Navy Electronic Commerce Online (AsiaNECO) website, with two proposals received.
