WASHINGTON (NNS) - Naval Facilities Engineering Command Washington awarded a contract for design of the new "Building C" at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Feb. 13.

HDR Architecture Inc. of Alexandria, Va., received a $31,396,610 contract award to design a 562,592 square foot addition to the hospital building, which will replace buildings 2, 4, 6, 7 and 8, renovate building 10, and provide a child care drop-off center.

"The planned renovations and additions to the WRNMMC are intended to provide wounded warriors, active duty military personnel and their families with world-class healthcare facilities," said Naglaa Chemenju, project manager at NAVFAC Washington.

The design is scheduled for completion in June 2014.

The project is in response to a Fiscal Year 2010 congressional mandate to develop and implement a comprehensive master plan to provide sufficient world-class military medical facilities and an integrated system of healthcare delivery for the national capital region.

Construction will provide new facilities for deployment health, health readiness, vision, adult behavioral health, a dental readiness clinic, occupational health, ambulatory surgery and more. Supporting facilities will include parking, way finding, paving and site improvements. The facilities will meet Department of Defense minimum antiterrorism and accessibility standards, and meet federal energy and water conservation mandates.

Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2014 and be completed in 2018.
