YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Pacific commander announced July 17 to NAVFAC Far East leadership that NAVFAC Far East has won a 2013 Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Safety Excellence Award.
Rear Adm. Bret J. Muilenburg made the announcement to NAVFAC Far East's Executive Steering Group and Safety team at the command's headquarters aboard Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan.
The following day, July 18, he presided over NAVFAC Far East's change of command, in which Capt. Michelle C. La Duca assumed command from Capt. Don R. Chandler.
"This recognition is a testament to each member of our team's commitment and focus on safety," Chandler wrote in an e-mail earlier that week to the command's entire workforce of more than 2,000 military, U.S. civilian and host nation employees. "I could not be prouder of each of you for your efforts in these areas, in addition to all of the remarkable things you do every day."
NAVFAC Far East was recognized for its unparalleled safety achievements in 2012 in the Ashore Industrial 'B' category.
In his July 2 ALNAV message announcing Safety Excellence recipients, Secretary Ray Mabus stated, "Safety and Risk Management are indispensable to effectively prepare for and complete our mission, whether at home or deployed in harm's way. Your safety accomplishments are proof positive of your mission safety command culture and your commitment to each other, to safety excellence, to the Nation, and to the Department of the Navy as a world class safety organization. You have justly earned the right to fly my SECNAV Safety Flag for the next year. My personal congratulations to all SECNAV Safety Excellence Award recipients."
"Please congratulate each other and enjoy this recognition that you have so earned and deserved," Chandler remarked to NAVFAC Far East's team, "But also let us use this award as an even greater incentive to fight complacency from creeping into our programs and continue the great energy and focus on taking care of each other. Well done, NAVFAC Far East!"
