YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Far East has been recognized for its outstanding safety program for the second consecutive year.

Commander, Naval Safety Center announced the winners of the Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 Chief of Naval Operations Awards for Achievement in Safety Ashore via naval message, April 14.

NAVFAC Far East was selected as the top industrial safety program outside of the continental United States - which it also won for its safety efforts in FY12.

The award recognizes safety programs for their significant contributions to Navy safety and occupational health.

"This recognition is testament to the intense focus our entire team has on safety every day, in one of the Navy's most complex and challenging operational environments," said NAVFAC Far East Safety and Occupational Health Director, James Akashi. "We don't just practice safety - we live it as an integral and indispensable part of our command and work culture."

According to the message, winners excelled in directly supporting the Secretary of Defense's 75 percent mishap reduction goal by reducing mishap trends and costs and demonstrating strong safety leadership. They were also the most innovative and enthusiastic in marketing safety and promoting a superior level of safety culture within their commands.

NAVFAC Far East will now be forwarded as a Navy nominee, along with other ashore winners, for the Secretary of the Navy Safety Excellence Awards.
