BETHESDA, Md. (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Washington awarded a $26.9 million firm-fixed price contract July 15 to Walsh Construction Company II, LLC, of Chicago, Ill. for the construction of the electrical capacity and cooling towers at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Bethesda, Md.
The project includes construction of electrical upgrades to improve the capacity of the power distribution infrastructure. The project also consist of the demolition and reconstruction of three existing cooling towers, and the construction of a fourth cooling tower cell to accommodate future loads.
"If utility infrastructure is not increased, additional construction cannot be supported at NSA Bethesda," said Lt. Cmdr. Andrew Shinka, of the facilities engineering & acquisition division. "In our post-BRAC environment, the existing electrical system cannot accommodate any future construction. This project provides critical upgrades to the capacity of the electrical distribution system, both on the installation and off-site at the nearest PEPCO Station. Electrical upgrades double the capacity for power at NSA Bethesda to accommodate anticipated future demand."
The project is scheduled to be completed January 2016.
