WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Public Works Department Patuxent River is overseeing the demolition of Pier 360 at Solomons Annex, Solomons, Maryland, which began June 26.

The entire pier burned in April 2009. The fire caused the structural support of the pier to deteriorate.

Pier 360 is unsafe and unusable due to instability of the support structures and a lack of safe access to the entire length of the pier.

"We have taken proper safety precautions to ensure successful completion of the demolition," said Ensign Gus Murray, construction manager at PWD Patuxent River.

With it being boating and tourist season, the project is receiving a lot of attention.

"With crane work being performed over water, this project has a considerable amount of moving parts and has received a lot of interest by the general public," said Murray.

The $1.6 million contract was awarded to Asturian Inc. March 2014 and is scheduled to be completed November 2014.
