PORT HUENEME, Calif. (NNS) -- The Naval Facilities Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center (NAVFAC EXWC) awarded $14.5 million in energy audits for eight Naval regions Sept. 30.

Energy audits covering 56 million square feet of facilities will be performed at installations within NAVFAC Southeast, Northwest, Naval District Washington, Mid-Atlantic, Europe-Africa-Southwest Asia (EURAFSWA), Far East, and Hawaii as part of a four-year audit plan.

"The awards will identify key energy saving opportunities for packaging by the eight regions into projects that meet energy saving goals," said NAVFAC EXWC Commanding Officer Capt. Mark. K. Edelson. "The audits support the Navy's ongoing compliance for comprehensive energy and water audits specified by the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007."

The energy audits are a joint effort with Commander, Naval Installations Command (CNIC), NAVFAC Headquarters, and NAVFAC EXWC, with funding provided through CNIC. Facilities Engineering Commands (FECs) developed the audit requirements.

The audits were awarded as task orders on the Navy's Architecture and Engineering Energy and Utility Contract. The commands will provide vital guidance and oversight, validate requirements and review deliverables.

Audit costs will be recouped by identifying and implementing projects that pay for themselves with renewable resources and energy efficiencies.

The audit deliverables will cover a wide range of energy savings strategies, including building envelopes, general condition and renewable resource assessments; heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC), fixture, lighting and commissioning assessments; and energy and water project recommendations for inclusion into initial development plans.

NAVFAC EXWC is the Navy's premier activity for facilities and expeditionary technology solutions, engineering services, equipment logistics and products needed to equip the fleet and meet warfighter requirements. NAVFAC EXWC also delivers specialized engineering and technology solutions that support sustainable facilities and provides logistics and expeditionary systems support for Navy combat force capabilities.
