JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast awarded an $8 million firm-fixed-price task order March 31 to Leebcor Services, LLC, a small business based in Williamsburg, Virginia, for the repair of the Trident Refit Facility Refit Wharf 2 located at Naval Submarine Base (NSB), Kings Bay, Georgia.

"Refit Wharf 2 is in poor condition and has deteriorated rapidly over the last few years," said NSB Kings Bay Public Works Officer Cmdr. Omarr Tobias. "If this project is delayed, corrosion and deterioration will continue and could jeopardize the loading capacity of the wharf."

The task order calls for repairs that include basic concrete restoration of concrete piles, pile caps, edge beams and mooring foundation and hardware. Cathodic protection will be built into the concrete structure to maintain the integrity of the repair. Ladders will be replaced and a catwalk will be repaired. Fender pile sacrificial anodes, fender wraps and bonding systems will also be repaired.

Work is expected to be completed by August 2016.

Small business play a vital role in the American economy -- employing half of our country's workforce, creating nearly two out of every three new American jobs, and often being the source of the next great American innovation. NAVFAC Southeast strives to meet its goals building on its success by providing contract opportunities to small businesses.

"This is an example of an ideal match between the Navy's often unique requirements and the professionalism, craftsmanship and responsiveness that our small business vendors bring to the table," said Nelson Smith, NAVFAC Southeast small business deputy. "Every small business award is a win for the taxpayers, the nation and the Navy."

Each year NAVFAC establishes target goals for Small Business, Small Disadvantaged Business, Historically Underutilized Business Zone Small Business, Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business, and Women-Owned Small Business categories. Smith explained the maximum practicable use of small business concerns is a matter of national interest with both social and economic benefits.
