NAVFAC Far East to Improve Living Quarters at Camp Foster

YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command Far East awarded contracts to renovate bachelor officer quarters (BOQ) and bachelor enlisted quarters (BEQ) at Camp Foster, Okinawa Dec. 9-10.

A $5.1 million contract will renovate 25-year-old BOQ 4138 and a $5.4 million contract will renovate 37-year-old BEQ 5698.

"These contracts will extend the useful life of the homes of more than 400 Marines and Sailors living in Okinawa," said Lt. Cmdr. Brad Coleman, Facilities Engineering and Acquisition Division (FEAD) Camp Butler Director. "The projects will provide a homely atmosphere and improve the quality of life for Marines here."

BOQ 4138 will see upgrades to telecommunications, with dedicated telecom rooms on each floor, including provision of email and cable television. Laundry rooms will also be upgraded and areas affected by construction will be compliant with anti-terrorism force protection, fire suppression and seismic building standards. BOQ 4138 has 22 rooms to house single or unaccompanied officer Marines.

Work on BEQ 5698 will include replacement of all interior and exterior doors and windows, HVAC system, water lines and lavatories. Upgrades will be made to electrical systems, lighting fixtures plumbing fixtures, and washers and dryers. Areas affected by construction will be compliant with anti-terrorism force protection, fire suppression and seismic building standards. Vinyl floor tiles and cove base containing asbestos will be removed. BEQ 5698 has 196 rooms to house single or unaccompanied enlisted Marines.

"The project team overcame compressed execution time lines and FY15 budget constraints to award this contract which will deliver much needed repairs to these facilities," said Lt. Marvie Wonsia, FEAD Camp Butler Engineering Officer.

The contracts were both awarded to NIPPO Corporation of Japan. Work on BOQ 4138 is scheduled for completion in January 2017 and BEQ 5698 is scheduled for completion in March 2017.

FEAD Camp Butler provides construction and service contracting support to nine Marine Corps camps and one Marine Corps air station at Okinawa, Japan.
