SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded a $24.8 million task order Sept. 3 under a previously awarded multiple award construction contract for repair of the Miramar Fuel Pipeline at Naval Base Point Loma (NBPL).
"It has been an honor to be a part of this project," said Axel Damoudt, NAVFAC Southwest design manager for this project. "The entire team consistently demonstrated excellent coordination with multiple individuals within NAVFAC, DLA, FLC San Diego, the Designer of Record, Enterprise Engineering, Inc., and other government agencies - City of San Diego, Unified Port of San Diego, Metropolitan Transit System, and CALTRANS on a regular basis for a complete set of design documents and the award of a unique project despite the interesting challenges."
CB&I Federal Services LLC of Baton Rouge, Lousiana, was awarded the task order and will provide construction repairs that are necessary to maintain safe operation of the existing pipeline.
The project is scheduled to repair approximately five miles of the pipeline with new 8-inch pipe, and includes provision for five additional valve vaults to enhance operational and maintenance needs.
The existing pipeline will remain in service while the new pipe is being constructed and will require extensive coordination with local government and state agencies. It is a dual product pipeline carrying both jet propellant 5 and diesel fuel marine.
"This project will provide the care and maintenance to the fuel pipeline, an important strategic military asset for years to come," said Nam Nguyen, NAVFAC Southwest project manager for this project.
Work will be performed in San Diego and is expected to be completed by spring 2017. Fiscal year 2015 defense working capital contract funds in the amount of $24.8 million are being obligated to this award. NAVFAC Southwest is the contracting activity.
