YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) -- Public Works Department Yokosuka awarded a $5.1 million contract June 26, to retrofit a deteriorated administration building on board Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan.
The building currently supports administrative personnel for several organizations, including Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support Pacific, Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Far East and Americable International Japan, Inc.
"The retrofit will increase occupancy through implementing a more efficient design for administrative spaces and is critical to the phasing of future renovation projects for the installation," said Public Works Officer Cmdr. Jason Wood. "Ultimately the overall safety and habitability for the occupants will be greatly enhanced by this project."
The facility, originally built in 1940, has exceeded its useful life cycle and high maintenance costs have made the retrofit necessary. Work will include replacing flooring, ceilings, electrical systems and heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. Safety will be enhanced through a new fire suppression system and reinforcements to bring the building in line with the latest U.S. seismic design standards.
The $5,087,711 contract was awarded to Sumiju Yokosuka Kogyo Co. Ltd. Work is scheduled for completion in June 2018.
