the Department of the Navy invites public comment on the Proposed Plan for
Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) 3 – Aerial Bombing Target at Parade Deck (Operable Unit 17) under the
Environmental Restoration Program for Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Parris Island

Proposed Plan for Operable Unit 17, UXO 3

The Department of the Navy and MCRD Parris Island, in coordination with the United States Environmental Protection Agency Region 4 (USEPA) and the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES), invite public comment on the proposed plan at Environmental Restoration Program UXO 3 – Aerial Bombing Target at Parade Deck at MCRD Parris Island in Parris Island, South Carolina. The preferred cleanup approach for addressing presumed munitions-related explosive hazards in the subsurface at UXO 3 includes implementing land use controls to prevent exposure to munitions items presumed to be present in the subsurface soil at UXO 3. Land use controls would restrict site uses through well-established base controls. No action is required for munitions constituents (chemicals released from munitions items) in soil or groundwater at UXO 3 because exposure to chemicals in these media does not pose an unacceptable risk.
