Background
NSA Northwest Annex is an annex of NSA Hampton Roads. NSA Northwest Annex consists of approximately 4,500 acres on the Virginia/North Carolina border in Chesapeake, Virginia and Currituck County, North Carolina.
The facility was commissioned as the United States Navy Radio Station Northwest on January 1, 1954 to serve as a communications receiving facility for Naval activities in the area. Historical and ongoing activities at the facility consist of radio communications, radar activities, security training including small arms training, and support activities such as retail, recreation, child care, counseling, and healthcare.
Base housing is located in the northeastern portion of the facility along with several NSA Northwest Annex buildings such as the former Naval Exchange (NEX) service station, stores, the fire department, and other residential and recreational structures.
The area surrounding NSA Northwest Annex is a combination of agricultural, residential, and government-owned.
