AIRCRAFT SOUND MONITORING:
In compliance with the Fiscal Year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the United States Department of the Navy (Navy) measured sound levels of jet aircraft at Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island and NAS Lemoore and compared the resulting measured data with modeled noise data.
This webpage provides more detailed information on the design of the study, results of the monitoring, and data collected and/or produced during the study.

Technical Report
The technical report provides additional details on the design of the monitoring study; a description of the data collection and analysis procedures; a detailed discussion on the comparison of the measured versus modeled results; and a summary of the conclusions of the study. The report also includes several appendices which provide more information on the basics of sound, the Department of Defense (DoD) aircraft noise models, and the DoD noise study procedures.

I. Aircraft Acoustic & Flight Operations Data
The data collected each period included: (1) acoustic recordings by sound level meters deployed at sites around each airfield to capture sound levels during a range of flight operations across a range of seasonal weather conditions; and (2) operations data, including logs of air traffic controllers and the monitoring teams, to document the flight activity scheduled and observed during each monitoring period.
NAS Whidbey Island (NASWI) Acoustic Data
The NASWI acoustic data is organized in eleven separate zip files; one file for each airfield monitoring location. Each file contains data from all four monitoring periods. The ‘READ ME’ file contains a description of the data and instructions on how to access the sound level meter software in order to read the data.

II. Acoustic Observation Data
The acoustic team used observer logs to document the observed details on the acoustic environment around the monitoring sites. These logs were used to help identify non-aircraft sound sources and identify aircraft events recorded by the sound level meters each monitoring period. The data is presented in one zip file for each installation. A ‘READ ME’ file contains a description of the data.

III. Aircraft Noise Event Database
The aircraft noise event classification process created an event database. The database is a catalogue of all aircraft noise events, and associated acoustic metrics and flight operation for each event. The database was used to analyze and compare the measured sound level data to modeled data. The noise event data is organized in zip files; one for each airfield. A ‘READ ME’ file contains a brief description of the data fields.
