the Department of the Navy invites public comment on the Proposed Plan for
Site 5–Former Paint Shop Disposal Area (Operable Unit 6) under the Installation Restoration
Program for Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Parris Island

The Department of the Navy and MCRD Parris Island, in coordination with the United States Environmental Protection Agency Region 4 (U.S. EPA) and the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES), invite public comment on the proposed plan at Installation Restoration Program Site 5–Former Paint Shop Disposal Area at MCRD Parris Island in Parris Island, South Carolina. The preferred cleanup approach for addressing subsurface soil within the disposal area, including fill containing construction debris, and groundwater at Site 5 is inspecting and improving the existing disposal area cover, monitoring groundwater, and implementing land use controls. Monitoring would be conducted and land use controls would be implemented to limit human exposure to contaminated subsurface soil and groundwater until contaminants are at levels that allow for unlimited use and unrestricted exposure.
