MANGILAO, Guam (NNS) -- Staff of Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Marianas Human Resources office took part in the University of Guam Job Fair, April 24, in an effort to recruit qualified applicants for job openings in more than 25 fields.  The fields range from architecture, engineering and community planning to environmental protection and archaeology to plumbing, air conditioning and welding.

Nearly 700 job seekers were in attendance.  Some entering the job market after graduating from UOG this spring, and a number appeared to have credentials and experience to qualify for NAVFAC employment.

“Although our job openings are not for entry level positions, we wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to reach out to locally available interested candidates and see what skill sets we might find,” said NAVFAC Marianas Human Resources Director Joni Borja. “We were very pleased with the number and qualifications of the people who expressed interest.”

About 125 job seekers signed in at the NAVFAC Marianas table and 30 left resumes. An additional nine resumes have been received since the job fair and the HR office continues to receive emails from potential candidates who took part in the job fair. Job seekers who left resumes indicated experience in financial management, accounting, payroll, budgeting, human resources, chemistry, information technology, water treatment, fuel systems, environmental protection, engineering and other fields.

NAVFAC Marianas currently employs more than 500 civilians in Guam and oversees the expenditure of hundreds of millions of federal dollars annually for construction, engineering, maintenance, utilities services, operation and maintenance of Navy vehicles, real estate, environmental support and other areas. The command HR office anticipates the NAVFAC Marianas workforce will only increase as its responsibilities increasingly come to include construction and support of Marine Corps Base Guam which is in the early stages of construction.

NAVFAC Marianas recently received “direct-hire” authority to allow the command to recruit and appoint qualified candidates for specific positions without going through the traditional lengthy competitive process.

Those interested in employment should monitor local newspapers as the NAVFAC Marianas HR office also plans to advertise job vacancies in local media. Job seekers are also encouraged to check the list of NAVFAC job openings online at http://navfac.usajobs.gov/.
