JOINT EXPEDITIONARY BASE FORT STORY

Environmental Restoration Program Public Website

Community Outreach

JEB Fort Story is committed to keeping the community informed about its environmental restoration efforts. The Navy provides regular updates to the Administrative Record, which includes all site documents through the Record of Decision or Decision Document. Documents can be accessed through the link on the Administrative Records tab. In accordance with CERCLA, the Navy also publishes public notices in the local newspaper, distributes fact sheets, and holds public meetings as needed.

Public participation is a vital part of the CERCLA process. At JEB Fort Story, the Navy is committed to transparency and open communication. While a Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) specifically for Fort Story has not been necessary to date due to the progress of current investigations and cleanup activities, The Navy recognizes the value of community input. As investigations and cleanups progress, the establishment of a Fort Story-specific RAB will be considered if community interest is identified. RABs typically include members of the community, local environmental groups, and state and federal officials.

Our neighboring installation, JEB Little Creek, has a long history of community engagement. JEB Little Creek established a RAB in 1994, which met regularly for many years to discuss environmental issues at the base. This RAB played an important role in their community relations program until 2015, when all cleanup actions were completed, or remedies were in place and functioning. While the Little Creek RAB no longer meets the Navy continues to maintain an Administrative Record, publish public notices, distribute fact sheets, and hold public meetings as needed. JEB The Navy draws on their experience and best practices as it continues its own community outreach efforts at Fort Story.
