Community Outreach
NSA Mechanicsburg no longer has a Restoration Advisory Board (RAB). The former RAB and its predecessor, the Technical Review Committee, worked with the Navy since 1988. The purpose of the RAB was to provide a forum for exchange of information and to partner with citizens of the surrounding communities who expressed interest in the environmental cleanup activities at NSA Mechanicsburg. Attendees at the meetings were predominantly community members and representatives of the Navy, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP). Due to the persistent demonstrated lack of citizen attendance, in 2023 it was determined that the RAB meeting format was not the proper vehicle for interacting with area residents. During the RAB Adjournment Meeting on September 13, 2023, the remaining two RAB members were honored for their years of service, and the RAB was adjourned without any objections. Subsequently, the Navy, U.S. EPA, and PADEP agreed to focus efforts on providing information on the NSA Mechanicsburg environmental restoration activities via the NSA Mechanicsburg public websites and mailings.

NSA MECHANICSBURG COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT PLAN
A Community Involvement Plan (CIP) is a site-specific strategy to enable meaningful community involvement throughout the restoration and cleanup process at the former NSA Mechanicsburg. The CIP was developed to comply with USEPA, Department of Defense, Navy, and Federal Registration Requirements and incorporated input from the public, through surveys and interviews, on how the public would like to be involved in the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act process.
