Old Storage Building 225
Long-term monitoring (LTM)
Originally the location of storage Building 225 which was destroyed by fire in 1976. Green water observed in runoff from the firefighting activity persisted over a mile downstream and a fish kill occurred.
The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act Facility Investigation (RFI) showed subsurface soil and groundwater are contaminated with several chlorinated volatile organic compounds, benzene, arsenic, and iron, and the contamination presents a potential unacceptable future human health risk. There were no unacceptable ecological risks or no unacceptable current human health risks.
A Corrective Measures Study and Statement of Basis recommended monitored natural attenuation, LTM of groundwater and surface water, land use controls, and seven-year reviews to address future potential risks.
Biennial LTM of groundwater and surface water began in 2018 and is ongoing.
