WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Washington held a change of command ceremony at the Washington Navy Yard, June 21.

Capt. Gregory Vinci relieved Capt. Andrew Hascall and became the ninth commanding officer of NAVFAC Washington since its establishment in July 2004 and Naval District Washington regional engineer.

“If I have learned anything over the past 26 years of military service, it is that good people choose to do meaningful work,” said Vinci. “And please, make no mistake about it, this work we do is meaningful and important.”

Vinci reported to NAVFAC Washington as the executive officer and Naval District Washington deputy regional engineer June 2017 and witnessed the hard work of the NAVFAC Washington team.

“I have seen firsthand and believe, at your core, you are men and women of character and competence,” said Vinci to the NAVFAC Washington Team. "I look forward to writing the history of NAVFAC Washington together over the next two years."

Vinci inherited a workforce of approximately 1,300 civilian and military personnel who provide a full range of facilities and engineering products and services to Navy, Marine Corps and other federal agencies in Maryland, Northern Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Vinci, a native of Rockaway, N.J., graduated from the Virginia Military Institute with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and received his commission through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program. He holds a Master of Science Degree in Civil Engineering (Construction Management) from The Pennsylvania State University and completed the Advanced Management Program at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business.

The official party for the ceremony included NAVFAC Atlantic Commander Rear Adm. Darius Banaji and U.S. Navy Chaplain Capt. Judy Malana.

Hascall, who received a Legion of Merit medal during the ceremony, will serve as the operations officer at NAVFAC Headquarters.
