JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast held an inaugural Women in Leadership forum, May 30, at the River Cove and Catering Conference Center onboard Naval Air Station (NAS) Jacksonville.

The theme for this year’s forum was “Innovative Resilience,” recognizing women throughout history that have provided inspiration to others through their innovation and resilience.

“We all have sources of inspiration to draw from and it is my hope that each of you are able to draw some golden nuggets of wisdom from each other today,” said NAVFAC Southeast Commanding Officer Capt. Mike Monreal during his opening comments.

The goal of the forum was to provide attendees with inspiration and guidance on career development as it is essential that a leader is prepared to lead through periods of disruptive innovation and rapid change.

“It’s not how many times you get knocked down, it’s how many times you get back up,” said Keynote Speaker, NAVFAC Southwest Business Director Kathryn Stewart. “You decide how you react to every situation.”

The common theme among presenters was work life, balance, believing in yourself and a robust work ethic.

Over 65 men and women were in attendance, which featured NAVFAC Southwest Business Director Kathryn Stewart, Naval Station Mayport Public Works Officer Cmdr. Juliana Strieter, NAVFAC Southeast Counsel Catherine Horan, NAVFAC Southeast Command Information Officer Andrea Freeman, The Honorable Glorious Johnson, Donna Ortega, Margo Moehring, Amy Saltmarsh and retired NAS Jacksonville Public Affairs Officer Miriam Gallet.

Attendees learned how to embrace opportunities for innovation, drive organizational change, develop talent in others and contribute more broadly to the success of their workplace.

In closing, Monreal challenged everyone to, “stay engaged, be flexible and be open to new ideas and innovations in support of our Navy and great nation.”
