Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) announced Nov. 3 its fiscal 2021 “Best-of-Type” award winners, recognizing outstanding facilities engineering commands (FECs) in the U.S. and overseas.
Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) announced Nov. 3 its fiscal 2021 “Best-of-Type” award winners, recognizing outstanding facilities engineering commands (FECs) in the U.S. and overseas.

NAVFAC Southeast was named the Best-of-Type award winner within the continental U.S. for its military construction (MILCON) program, which awarded $187 million toward several critical projects including a $65-million elementary school at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay. The command also supported the Navy’s undersea warfare enterprise by completing the initial phase of the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay recapitalization project, beginning work on the project's $359-million second phase ahead of schedule, and also awarding $41 million toward the final phase of the project.

The Best-of-Type overseas FEC award went to NAVFAC Far East for its outstanding public works and asset management programs. NAVFAC Far East awarded $81 million in Marine Corps special projects on time and completed two major bachelor enlisted quarters repair projects at Camp Butler. The command also played a critical role in enabling U.S. 7th Fleet to exercise continuity of operations ashore through critical building renovations including a new watch floor, and through innovative use of in-house shops, Seabees and contractors.

Both FECs maintained outstanding safety programs in their accomplishments.

“I applaud the outstanding work done by NAVFACs Southeast and Far East,” said NAVFAC Commander and Chief of Civil Engineers Rear Adm. John Korka. “These commands stand at the forefront of NAVFAC’s commitment to supporting our warfighters in this environment of strategic competition.”

NAVFAC presents its Best-of-Type awards annually based on FEC performance in five functional areas: MILCON, perform-to-plan, execution excellence, safety performance, fiscal stewardship, and people recognition and development.
